Delaware's O'Donnell Wants IRS to Punish CREW

By    |   Thursday, 28 July 2011 11:58 AM EDT

Former Delaware GOP Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell is pressing for the IRS to revoke the nonprofit status of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW), because she says the watchdog group was aware claims it filed against her were false, CNN reports.

“We’re fighting back because while I’m certainly not the first person they’ve come after, I would like to be the last,” O'Donnell said in a conference call with reporters. “I would like to stop this.”

In September 2010, CREW filed a complaint against O’Donnell, claiming she used more than $20,000 in campaign funds for living expenses. The GOP candidate said her house served as her campaign headquarters, so she was justified in using campaign funds to pay her rent.

O’Donnell is mounting her fight against CREW, even though the federal probe into her campaign officially closed this month. But she claimed the group will continue its “sleazy, underhanded and illegal tactics” unless its 501(c)3 status is revoked.

Anne Weismann, CREW's chief counsel, told CNN that O'Donnell's accusations are “without merit.”
