Oakland Police are preparing for a possible confrontation next Thursday at the anniversary protest of Occupy Oakland based on a threatening flyer that's been circulating around the city urging violence against Occupy participants.
According to the
Contra Costa Times, police are working to identify the source of the flier, which urges people to bring bats so they can "beat the (expletive)" out of Occupy demonstrators that "use our city landscape as a canvas for their divisive and violent message."
No one has stepped forward to publicly claim responsibility for the one-page flyer, but it contains a reference to Defend Our Oakland Movement, or DOOM, and calls for city residents to "stand up and defend the great city of Oakland.:
The Occupy demonstration is set for Oct. 25 to commemorate the group's eviction from around Oakland City Hall a year ago and the violent protests that followed later that day.
Police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said the department is investigating the threat, adding the city officials will not tolerate any “vandalism and crime under the guise of protected First Amendment activity” during the anniversary protest.
