President Obama left the Oval Office for the last time, and the Twitter hashtag #ThankYouObamas lit up Friday, the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States.
At 9:14 a.m., President Obama was seen setting a letter on the Resolute Desk for his successor, a tradition followed by Bill Clinton to George W. Bush and George W. Bush to President Obama, according to CBS News. He then left the Oval Office for the last time.
According to People magazine, the Obamas and the Trumps had tea together at the White House before going to the inauguration ceremony at the Capitol, where Donald Trump and Mike Pence were sworn in by Supreme Court Justices Chief John Roberts and Clarence Thomas, respectively.
As Obama passed into the ranks of former U.S. presidents with wife Michelle at his side, Twitter began to light up with thank yous to the Obama family for their service to the country.
Of course, a few were sarcastic.
