Two U.S. Army captains getting married on a Hawaiian golf course were forced to relocate their wedding after they were notified that President Barack Obama and his party would be golfing there.
Obama called the couple to apologize when he heard about what happened to
Natalie Heimel and her fiance Edward Mallue Jr., Bloomberg said.
The Associated Press reported that an unidentified source said the president didn’t know about the request for the couple of move their wedding away from the 16th hole until after the wedding was over.
The couple, who knew the president vacationed in Hawaii, had asked him to their wedding “on a lark,” Bloomberg said, and were declined.
“It was kind of ironic they got the letter from them and then, within hours, they were told they had to be moved due to him,” Mallue’s sister, Jamie McCarthy, told Bloomberg. “It was emotional, especially for her — she’s the bride and in less than 24 hours they had to change everything they had planned.”
Still, caterer Naile Brennan told Bloomberg, everyone is warned that when the president is in Hawaii, plans may have to be shuffled. Backup plans were already in place for other locations, and Mallue chose the lawn of base commanding officer Col. Eric Schaefer, which was near the 16th hole of the course.
“It's much prettier and much nicer venue unless you're an avid golfer,” Brennan told Bloomberg. “It's more secluded and there are no golfers yelling, 'Fore!'”
Despite the president’s apology, which McCarthy confirmed, the fact that the president’s entourage displaced a wedding drew comments online.
