President Barack Obama called three moms ahead of Mother's Day to thank them for being great parents, and The White House released a video featuring excerpts from the calls on Sunday.
"To my surprise, the man himself was on the other line," Stephanie Tarr of Coon Rapids
told the Minneapolis Star Tribune on Friday.
Tarr and her sons Kenny, 9, and Kai, 3, recently wrote to the first family to thank them for what they do "each day for our country and normal families like us throughout America."
When Tarr — who works as a waitress — got a surprise call from the Oval Office, Tarr said she "was just in complete shock that this was happening."
"The whole conversation and everything around it has been surreal," she continued. "He was very encouraging about the boys having a bright future."
CNN reported that the president also phoned Dawn Miller, a corrections officer from Tucson, Arizona. Her 22-year-old son received treatment for a rattlesnake bite through his mother's insurance with the help of the Affordable Care Act.
Patricia Church of Ormond Beach, Florida, the mother of a Marine based out of Camp Lejeune, also received a call from the Commander in Chief, whereupon he thanked her for her son's service.
