Hollywood is taking note as a political documentary, “2016: Obama's America,” appears poised to become a sleeper hit.

The low budget film features author Dinesh D’Souza laying out facts to assist viewers in gaining an understanding of the apparent motivations behind a number of President Barack Obama’s policies.

Having grown up in Mumbai, India, D’Souza’s background equips him with a unique perspective and enables him to delve into the anti-colonialism of the president’s father and expose what the New York Times referred to as “flaws consistent with the senior Obama’s multiple relationships, alcoholism, and fatal auto accident in 1982.”

This past weekend “2016: Obama's America” took the number 13 spot at the box-office.

The film’s gross soared 294 percent from the previous week’s revenue, with $1.25 million. Its per-screen average for Friday through Sunday rose to $7,391, beating studio films like “ParaNorman,” “Sparkle,” and week two of “The Bourne Legacy.”

The movie’s per-theater number represents the fifth highest average of any offering over the weekend and is highly unusual, considering that the number of screens displaying the film went up three-fold.

“2016: Obama's America” has now taken in $2.1 million in a six-week period and could make a breakout into a wide release shocker for the entertainment industry, while in the process having a potential impact on the 2012 presidential election.
