The FBI would like to speak to two men who found a pressure cooker bomb in a suitcase in NYC over the weekend, possibly foiling a bomb plot.
The FBI said the men opened the suitcase, removed the pressure cooker bomb device, and took the bag with them, leaving the device behind as they walked on the streets of New York Saturday night, Time reported.
Police are unsure whether the men knew the device was a bomb and stressed that the men are not suspects but may have helpful information.
NYPD Counterterrorism chief James Waters said at a news conference reported by NJ.com, “They are witnesses. There are no criminal charges. They’re not in any jeopardy of being arrested.”
According to New York Magazine, officials think the men may have disabled the bomb by tripping a wire.
A similar device exploded four blocks away in a garbage bin on the same night, injuring 31 people. The cell phone on the unexploded device led police to Ahmad Khan Rahami of Elizabeth, New Jersey, who was arrested Monday after a shootout with police.
Rahami is currently hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Investigations have revealed that he allegedly bought bomb components online and recovered video shows him creating an explosion in his backyard. His handwritten journal contains statements about jihad, including that “the sounds of bombs will be heard in the streets,” Fox News reported.
A federal public defender reported Tuesday night that Rahami has not been able to talk to a lawyer since his arrest.
