Dell founder Michael Dell purchased the most expensive home ever in New York City, a penthouse in Manhattan’s One57 tower.
The Wall Street Journal reported Dell paid $100.47 million for the almost 11,000-square-foot penthouse, which has six bedrooms and six bathrooms, in 2014. The purchase was only confirmed Thursday, however.
The home is the only one ever to sell for more than $100 million in the city, the WSJ reported. Dell has contracted to renovate the property even though it was brand new in 2014.
The building is known as a supertall skyscraper because it is more than 1,000 feet tall, and is located in what realtors dub Billionaire’s Row.
Fifty-plus residences in the building may still be available for sale, with at least 73 out of 130 having sold, according to the New York Post.
The project was undertaken during the height of the 2008 to 2010 recession and was funded by Aabar Investments and a private investor from Abu Dhabi, which was not known until 2016, the Post reported.
A penthouse purchase in a neighboring building may soon surpass Dell’s record when it is finalized, People reported.
Michael Dell bought a penthouse in Boston for close to $40 million last year after Dell acquired EMC, which is based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, the WSJ reported. He also owns a $10 million condo in Boston, a home in Austin, and a large compound on Hawaii’s Kona Coast.
Dell’s company is said to be considering an initial public offering four years after going private.
Last year Dell and his wife Susan pledged to donate $36 million to Hurricane Harvey Recovery through their foundation.
