A North Korean defector video showing him dashing across the Demilitarized Zone in a flurry of gunfire sparked a flurry of social media comments, with some saying South Korean soldiers should have fired back at his pursuing comrades.
Security video of the daring escape by the North Korean soldier, first driving a vehicle and then on foot while being hotly pursued, started making the rounds of news sites on Tuesday.
Anna Fifield, Tokyo bureau chief of The Washington Post, tweeted out one version of the video.
North Korean soldiers fired at the defector, and at least one hurried after him across the dividing line before running back to the northern side, Fox News reported, and then South Korean soldiers crawled up to the defector to drag him to safety.
The United Nations Command stated in findings by its special investigations team that the Korean People's Army of North Korea twice violated the U.N. Armistice Agreement during the incident, by firing weapons across the Military Demarcation Line and then when one North Korean soldier actually temporarily crossed the line.
Many on social media were outraged over the shooting, with some suggesting there should have been some response to North Korean soldiers firing on one of their own.
