The Northeast is bracing for a Nor’easter that is expected to snarl holiday travel plans on Wednesday.

"All of the major metro areas in the Northeast will be impacted by either heavy rain or heavy snow, along with high winds," CNN senior meteorologist Dave Hennen said.

The storm could bring as much as 16 inches of snow to western Massachusetts, NBC News reported.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo tweeted an advisory to travelers planning to use Interstate 84, saying the state is prepared to close the interstate as early as 7 a.m. Wednesday.

That tweet followed an earlier posting in which the governor relayed winter weather safety tips.

The National Weather Service describes a nor’easter as “a cyclonic storm that moves along the East Coast.” A nor’easter can bring heavy snow and rain, gale force winds, rough seas, coastal flooding, and beach erosion.

The National Weather Service tweeted a map of the storm’s predicted snowfall.

Winter weather is predicted to pummel many travel thoroughfares throughout the country, including snow on Interstate 35 from Minneapolis to Des Moines, on Interstate 94 through Wisconsin, and on Interstate 90 through the northern Rockies, ABC news reported. Heavy rain is forecast along Interstate 5 from Seattle to Portland
