The Nordstrom Tower, a proposed New York City condominium skyscraper, would alter the city’s skyline and create the world’s tallest residential building.
According to the New York Daily News, the Nordstrom Tower
would be located at 227 W. 57th St. and rise 1,775 feet high including the building’s spire, which would make it just one foot shorter than 1 World Trade Center.

The lower seven floors of the building will house a Nordstrom department store, while the upper floors will offer condos. A small version of the project has already received city approval, with plans for completion by 2018.
The Daily News said the larger building is expected to also receive approval as the 57th Street area has no restrictions on skyscraper height.
In late June, Nordstrom announced it would build a 300,000-square-foot department store, its first in the city.
“It’s a very big deal,” M. Ronald Ruskin, managing director retail broker Lansco and a former chairman of Gimbels, told The New York Times
. “It’s probably the most interesting thing to happen in retail in a long time.”
New York’s YIMBY reported that the Nordstrom Tower
is just one part of a Big Apple skyscraper building boom that “is entering unparalleled territory.”
Assuming the building is funded, YIMBY said it joins other numerous skyscraper projects underway or close to being built, including 111 W. 57th St., 432 Park Ave., 53 W. 53rd St. and 3 Hudson Yards.
Manhattan rents hit record highs in June, at $3,470 for an average rental price, and rents in Brooklyn didn’t fare much better as they neared record numbers, the Daily News said.
