Nordstrom is selling a $425 pair of jeans covered in fake mud, and social media is taking the retailer to task.

The product description on Nordstrom's website says the jeans “embody rugged, Americana workwear that’s seen some hard-working action” and show “you’re not afraid to get down and dirty.”

Mike Rowe, host of the cable show “Dirty Jobs,” criticized the fake-mud pants in a Facebook post, saying they were emblematic of the country’s “war on work.”

“They’re a costume for wealthy people who see work as ironic — not iconic,” Rowe wrote. “’Rugged Americana’ is now synonymous with a ‘caked-on, muddy coating.’ Not real mud. Fake mud. Something to foster the illusion of work.”

Brian Kilmeade of "Fox & Friends" also commented on the pants on the show, saying that those who want to wear muddy jeans should earn the mud. He pointed out that the jeans are supposed to show that you’re not afraid to get dirty, but “yet you are afraid, because you have to buy somebody else’s dirt.”

Co-host Steve Doocy said that if Nordstrom can really get $425 for the jeans, he has “a closet full of clothes that could look just like that in about half an hour.”

Twitter also was amused and insulted by the offering.
