A job ad for a nursing position that read "no Haitians" listed in an upstate New York Pennysaver community newspaper is now under investigation by the state attorney general.

According to NBC New York, the ad was published Thursday in Rockland County, and advertised a nursing position with Interim Healthcare in West Haverstraw.

"Laid back nurse, no haitians (sic), must have strong respiratory mngt," it read in part.

"The ad was mistakenly published without proper editing protocol," said the Pennysaver in a statement that soon followed the publication of the ad. "We recognize the wording was highly offensive to our readers, executives as well as the employees of The Pennysaver and by no means does it reflect the opinions or feelings of the company."

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman sent a letter on Monday to Interim Healthcare, telling the company that the ad violated federal and state anti-discrimination laws, and that the company must submit proof by Thursday that the ad has been removed.

Haitian American Nurses Association of Rockland County founder Berthilde Durfrene told CBS News that she was appalled when she saw the ad.

"Why the Haitian nurses? And I started to think what could possibly trigger such a mean and disgusting thing from anyone," Dufrene said.

"I am outraged at this blatant form of employment discrimination," echoed New York State Senator David Carlucci in a statement. "This company should be ashamed of itself, and Pennysaver should strongly reconsider running any job postings from Interim Healthcare in future publications."

Interim Healthcare president Katherine McNally responded to the uproar with a statement of apology.

"We value the diversity of our patients and our employees. The ad in the Pennysaver for an LPN is totally unacceptable and is offensive to us, and we know to all of you. I can assure you that we take this seriously. We have engaged an independent third party to conduct a comprehensive review of what occurred. All policies and procedures will be reviewed to assure that it will never happen again. We have already taken action and will continue to do so. Please accept our sincere apology. In particular, we apologize to the entire Haitian community."
