New Jersey State Police have charged three people, among them the president of the Elizabeth Board of Education, with lying about their income to obtain federally subsidized meals for their children, reports the
Newark Star-Ledger.
Marie Munn, school board president, was arrested in her home Monday morning on charges of third-degree theft by deception and third-degree tampering with public records or information.
The same charges were also filed against Angela Lucio, the former wife of a school principal, and Peter Abitanto, husband of the supervisor of the district’s school custodians.
The charges were filed by the Division of Criminal Justice after a Star-Ledger story reported that the children of Munn and the others received free meals.
Since then, Munn has repaid the over $2,800 in benefits her children received. Abitanto and Lucio are reportedly trying to make arrangements to repay their benefits of $1,738 and $833 respectively.
If convicted, all three face up to five years in prison, said a spokesman for the attorney general’s office.
