As official Nigeria World Cup jerseys sell out within hours, counterfeit jerseys are now meeting the demand.
The design for the official jersey, manufactured by Nike, was unveiled three months ago, stimulating a strong demand. When it went on sale Friday, fans lined up outside London’s Nike store to get their hands on one, but most walked away disappointed, CNN reported.
The network interviewed some of the fans hoping to purchase a Nigerian World Cup jersey.
Nike released “the home and away jersey, a fan kit, a travel suit, a bucket cap and an anthem wear, and Mercurial football boots as part of the collection,” according to The Guardian.
Nike, an American sportswear company, announced that it had no plans to restock the collection.
However, even before the Nike Nigeria jersey went on sale, fake jerseys began flooding the market.
"People started buying the 1994 US World Cup jersey a lot when the new Nigeria jersey didn't come out early,” vendor Ronke Oni told CNN. “I got the new Nigeria jersey last month from Thailand. It sells faster and it's cheaper. The most popular one is the home jersey. It's hotcake right now."
Oni told CNN she derives most of her fake jersey sales online
"Most Nigerians, I don't think can afford the original," she said. "The replica is the same as the original, except you look closely at it."
