Hasbro is giving fans the chance to vote on new pieces for Monopoly, including whether to keep any of the original tokens that have been part of the game since its inception in 1935.
A total of 65 options will be in play in the Token Madness contest at VoteMonopoly.com, including the current eight tokens: Scottish terrier, battleship, automobile, top hat, thimble, boot, wheelbarrow, and the cat.
In a 2013 fan vote, the cat replaced the "super-underrated" iron, one of the earliest Monopoly game pieces, according to Nerdist.
The new tokens will be gold in color, and choices include sports-related items like beachball, bicycle, and race car; various footwear including cowboy boot and bunny slipper; and six different emoji pieces if you count the thumbs-up.
Your new token could be the best thing since sliced bread — or it could be sliced bread, which is another of the choices.
Many of the new pieces seem to be an attempt to make the game more current and modern, like the hashtag and computer tokens, while others like the penguin and T-rex are perennial favorites. A few even hearken back to days gone by, like the grammaphone and typewriter.
The contest runs today through Jan. 31. Winners will be announced on World Monopoly Day, March 19, according to a press release from Hasbro, and the new Monopoly edition with the winning pieces will hit store shelves in August.
The Monopoly Token Madness Edition is available now with the eight current silver-colored tokens plus eight of the new golden tokens currently up for vote.
