New Monopoly game pieces have been introduced Friday to replace the boot, wheelbarrow, and thimble tokens, all staples of the iconic 82-year-old Hasbro board game.
Hasbro conducted a vote on VoteMonopoly.com, where 4.3 ballots were cast with the T-Rex, rubber ducky, and penguin tokens joining five classic pieces – the Scottie dog, hat, car, cat, and battleship, CNN reported.
Monopoly fans had 64 possible options to pick from, including 56 new pieces, that included the hashtag, emoji and computer.
Hasbro revealed in a statement on its website that the Scottie dog proved to be most popular piece among voters while the battleship hung on as a game piece taking the final eighth spot in the voting.
"The Monopoly Token Madness Vote was our biggest fan-powered program to date and the global Monopoly community has spoken," Jonathan Berkowitz, senior vice president of marketing for Hasbro Gaming, said in a statement.
"The next generation of tokens clearly represents the interests of our fans around the world and we're proud to have our iconic game impacted by the people that feel most passionate about playing it," Berkowitz continued.
The T-Rex token proved to be the most popular among the new pieces, receiving the second highest number of votes overall, according to Hasbro. Of the replaced tokens, the boot received the most votes with 83,000, but it was not good enough to stay part of the game.
Hasbro said some tokens got help from online campaigns. The car token received assistance from the car sharing service Zipcar, which started the #SaveTheCar campaign with humorous tweets on social media.
Hasbro said the New England Aquarium took up the cause for the penguin with its hashtag #VotePenguin.
Monopoly said the "next generation" games will be available for purchase in the fall.
Many on social media, though, appeared to want the old pieces to hang around after the initial news.
