Netflix has its sights set on the Arabic market and will be debuting its first original series set in the region
next year, CNN Money reported.
The streaming service will debut a six-episode supernatural Arabic thriller titled “Jinn,” which tells the story of teens who discover a genie in the ancient Jordanian city of Petra.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, friendships are tested and romances grow in the young adult drama that will be produced with Middle Eastern talent and shot in Jordan.
The series will see executive producers Elan and Rajeev Dassani, who worked as VFX specialists on a string of U.S. series including “Scandal,” team up with Lebanese director Mir-Jean Bou Chaaya and Bassel Ghandour, who was responsible for writing the Oscar nominated “Theeb,” Deadline reported.
Commenting on their latest project, Chaaya said “Jinn” portrays Arab youth culture in a way that is both unique and authentic.
"This is a great opportunity to portray Arab youth in a very unique way,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “The level of authenticity Netflix is trying to achieve with this show is definitely what attracted me the most to be part of this project.”
Ghandour added that people in the Middle East all know “someone who has a Jinn story, so it’s nice to take that and turn it into a fun and mysterious teen adventure that everyone can enjoy,” he said, according to Deadline.
“On a broader note, I love that Netflix is investing a lot in the region, it’s a real turning point. We have such a rich storytelling culture, and we’ll finally be able to enjoy Arabic content with Netflix quality.”
On Thursday, Netflix will launch its first Arabic project, a stand-up comedy show featuring Lebanese star Adel Karam of the thriller, “The Insult,” CNN said.
