The Nashville Predators honored a man who stopped a shooting at a Waffle House in Antioch last week during game 2 of their playoff series Sunday against the Winnipeg Jets.
James Shaw Jr. stopped the shooting by grabbing the hot barrel of the AR-15 rifle and wrestling it away from the shooter, then pushing him out of the restaurant. Four people were killed in the shooting and four others including Shaw were injured, but Shaw is credited with preventing many more deaths.
Shaw also started a GoFundMe campaign that has raised more than $200,000 for the victims of the shooting.
The Predators honored Shaw by having him and his family as VIP guests to the playoff game where Shaw met the coach of the team, Peter Laviolette, and was presented with a personalized jersey from the team, The Associated Press reported.
Shaw also got to meet and talk with some of the players, Sports Illustrated reported. During the game, Shaw was shown on the video monitors and the crowd gave him a standing ovation, TMZ reported. The Predators won the game 5-4 in overtime.
Shaw was pictured wearing a shirt that said “Spread Love,” and with smaller bandages that indicated the burns on his hand are healing, the AP noted.
Twitter users agreed Shaw is a hero and applauded the Predators for honoring him.
