If you're trying to spot a narcissist, check out the eyebrows. A new study suggests the brows of narcissists may be darker, thicker, and more distinct than their non-narcissistic counterparts.

Participants in the study, published in the Journal of Personality, identified who they thought might be narcissists by looking at their faces, and then just their eyebrows, with surprising accuracy, Business Insider reported.

Researchers theorized narcissists might “seek to maintain distinct eyebrows to facilitate others’ ability to notice, recognize and remember them; thereby increasing their likability and reinforcing their overly positive self-views,” BI reported.

Eyebrows also could send more social messages than people realize or intend.

“The ability to identify dark personality traits at zero-acquaintance provides particular value for avoiding exploitation and manipulation,” the researchers wrote, according to BI.

Some common personality traits of narcissists are self-aggrandizement, assertiveness, take-charge attitude, and manipulation of others, particularly those who can do something for them, according to Inc.

Grandiose narcissists like those whose faces were used in the study are especially “flamboyant, assertive, and interpersonally dominant,” according to Psychology Today. They also can be “overconfident in making decisions and unlikely to learn from their mistakes.”

Grandiose narcissists tend to agree with statements like, “If I ruled the world, it would be a better place,” and “I like to show off my body,” Psychology Today reported.

Presidents who presented with grandiose narcissism were rated higher in “presidential greatness” and initiated important legislation more often, but also were more likely to be impeached for unethical behavior, PT reported.

The study showed that average people untrained in psychology could still identify these narcissists with a good deal of accuracy, giving them a way to avoid them if they wish to do so.
