A mother and son who died in an explosion and fire at a Myrtle Beach campground early Tuesday morning have been identified by authorities.
The fire started with an explosion just after midnight in a trailer at the Apache Family Campground and Pier, according to WSOC. Four trailers caught fire in all, and two were destroyed by the flames. Firefighters had the fire under control within an hour.
Horry County coroner said the two victims of the fire were Shelby McGuire, 62, and her son Cory McGuire, 37. Another man who was in the trailer was taken to the hospital by helicopter for treatment, WYFF reported. His identity was not known.
The cause of the fire was not known, but firefighters and police are investigating, WYFF reported. “Anytime we have a fire at any location, especially when we have a fatality, we have law enforcement come to the scene to help with the investigation,” Horry County Fire Rescue Chief Joey Tanner said.
According to the police report, police detectives and an arson investigator are involved, WYFF reported.
Apache Family Campground and Pier is an oceanfront property in North Myrtle Beach that is mostly used by families vacationing at Myrtle Beach, but has some permanent units for year-round living, according to the website. It wasn’t clear whether the fire victims were permanent residents of the campground or vacationers.
The campground’s pier is billed as the longest wooden fishing pier on the East Coast.
