British Media Hacking Not Limited to Murdoch

By    |   Tuesday, 26 July 2011 05:20 PM EDT

The phone hacking scandal that has hit Rupert Murdoch’s empire is not limited to the media mogul’s publications as the practice has been used by the British press for a long time, the Atlantic reports.

British newspapers are national and competition is so fierce that media companies believe they have to resort to any tactic they can to beat the competition, the Atlantic says.

Also, U.S. phone companies largely insist on changing voicemail passwords, because they fear getting in trouble with the Federal Communications Commission if they don’t.

British phone providers don’t bother with that formality, and perhaps that’s how all the voicemails were hacked, according to the Atlantic.
