Mumia Abu-Jamal, a Cop Killer, to Be Commencement Speaker

Mumia Abu-Jamal, the convicted Philadelphia cop killer, has been selected as a commencement speaker by a Vermont college and will address graduates with a pre-recorded speech at Sunday' ceremony, according to Philly.com.

Abu-Jamal, 60, born Wesley Cook, was convicted in the 1981 slaying of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner and sentenced to death. Abu-Jamal proclaimed his innocence and became a cause celeb, and his sentence was later reduced to life in prison without parole.

Faulkner's widow, Maureen Faulkner, said on Fox News' "The Kelly File" Tuesday that she was upset by the decision of Goddard College in Plainfield to have Abu-Jamal as a commencement speaker.

"I am absolutely outraged that they would have such a hate-filled murderer as a commencement speaker," said Faulkner. "This man murdered my husband with malice and premeditation. He is evil. What does he have to offer any commencement or any kind of enrichment? … He is a murderer and he lost his voice when he put a bullet between my husband's eyes."

Goddard issued a statement
about Abu-Jamal on Monday
, saying that the remarks were pre-recorded by Prison Radio Noelle Hanrahan and will be played with the video "Long Distance Revolutionary: A Journey with Mumia Abu-Jamal" by Stephen Vittoria.

"Choosing Mumia as their commencement speaker, to me, shows how this newest group of Goddard graduates expresses their freedom to engage and think radically and critically in a world that often sets up barriers to do just that," said Bob Kenny, Goddard College interim president.

Goddard's statement said the selection was in keeping with the school's tradition of giving the students control of picking the person they wish to address them for graduation.

The selection of Abu-Jamal, though, drew a sharp rebuke from Pennsylvania Corrections Secretary John Wetzel, according to PennLive.com.

"I cannot express my disdain enough about Goddard College's decision to allow this individual to be a commencement speaker," said Wetzel on Tuesday. "Police officers put their lives on the line every day to protect society and now we have a college allowing an individual convicted of murdering a police officer to share his opinions with impressionable students. This fact is very troubling."
