The rebranded MTV Movie and TV Awards, which added television programs to the event, saw "Beauty and the Beast" and "Stranger Things" walk away as big winners.
"Beauty and the Beast," which hit theaters in March, won movie of the year honors while its star Emma Watson won for best actor in a movie. The Netflix original drama "Stranger Things" won show of the year and its star Millie Bobby Brown was selected as best actor in a show.
"To me, (this award) indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes," Watson said after receiving her award that was not broken down by gender, according to E! News. "And that doesn't need to be separated into two different categories. Empathy and the ability to use your imagination should have no limits."
Known for its own unique categories, Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome, from the Oscar-winning movie "Moonlight," won the award for best kiss; Taraji P. Henson, from the movie "Hidden Figures," was awarded for best hero; and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, of "The Walking Dead," won for best villain.
Chrissy Metz created a buzz on the show's red carpet with a burgundy latex dress. Randee Dawn, of the "Today" show said that the "This Is Us" star "looked amazing and perfect for the edgy, rock 'n roll atmosphere the awards traditionally attracts."
Metz appeared to answer some critics, though, on social media.
