Amazon Studios has canceled “Mozart in the Jungle,” a Gael Garcia Bernal comedy-drama, after four seasons and critical acclaim.
The offbeat half-hour show, produced and streamed by Amazon Studios, was a surprise 2016 Golden Globe winner as both Best Comedy Series and Best Performance by Garcia Bernal. It told the story of a brash young conductor at the New York Symphony.
“We are so proud of the four seasons we made of this show and are grateful to the cast, crew, fans and Amazon for writing this symphony with us. We hope people will keep finding the show for years to come,” executive producers Paul Weitz, Will Graham, Roman Coppola, and Jason Schwartzman said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In addition to Garcia Bernal, the show starred Lola Kirke, Malcolm McDowell, Bernadette Peters, Hannah Dunne, Saffron Burrows, and Schwartzman, and followed the infighting the characters engage in to survive.
The series was inspired by oboist Blair Tindall’s 2005 memoir “Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs, and Classical Music,” and premiered Dec. 23, 2014.
“Mozart in the Jungle” joins three other comedies Amazon cut from its streaming lineup — “One Mississippi,” “I Love Dick,” and “Jean-Claude Van Johnson.”
Fans of the show took to social media to protest the decision.
