The Top Money-Making Movies of All Time

In recent years, movies have been raking in an impressive amount at the box office, with many grossing over $100 million domestically, but how do they compare to the old classics? We find out by taking a look at seven of the top money-making movies of all time, as highlighted by 24/7 Tempo.  

7. Jaws (1975) 

  • Domestic gross in 2019 dollars: $1,003,205,479 
  • Worldwide gross: $1,816,187,766 
  • Production budget: $27,009,378 

The 1975 film has stood the test of time. "Jaws" currently has a Rotten Tomato rating of 98%, an 8/10 IMDB rating and an 89% thumbs up from viewers.  

6. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) 

  • Domestic gross in 2019 dollars: $1,007,192,546 
  • Worldwide gross: $1,835,553,650 
  • Production budget: $24,305,367 

Steven Spielberg has directed dozens of blockbusters but "E.T." made the most money at the domestic box office. The film spent 17 weeks at the top of the box office and earned more than its production budget in the first weekend it was released.  

5. 101 Dalmatians (1961) 

  • Domestic gross in 2019 dollars: $1,009,805,516 
  • Worldwide gross: $1,009,805,516 
  • Production budget: $26,400,144 

The film was re-released in theatres several times, in 1969, 1979, 1985 and 1991, and each time it brought in more money than the previous release.  

4. The Sound of Music (1965) 
- Domestic gross in 2019 dollars: $1,022,425,441 
- Worldwide gross: $1,792,935,991 
- Production budget: $51,367,370 

"The Sound of Music" remains a firm favorite among viewers and its five Oscars, including Best Picture, bears testament to this.  

3. Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) 
- Domestic gross in 2019 dollars: $1,583,226,789 
- Worldwide gross: $2,701,449,936 
- Production budget: $37,777,809 

The film, which launched the acclaimed franchise and won six Oscars, was so popular when it came out that its theatrical release ran for 135 continuous weeks.  

2. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) 
- Domestic gross in 2019 dollars: $2,676,449,218 
- Worldwide gross: $2,676,449,218 
- Production budget: $21,695,211 

As the first animated film to include sound and color, Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" remains the top-grossing animated flick. 

1. Gone with the Wind (1939) 
- Domestic gross in 2019 dollars: $2,971,442,929 
- Worldwide gross: $5,840,651,173 
- Production budget: $59,479,568 

The 1939 hit has withstood the test of time despite recent controversy.
