MoviePass announced a new annual plan promotion Friday that would allow customers to subscribe to its service for a year for a rate that works out to just $7.50 a month.
Only new subscribers can get the new plan, which charges $6.95 a month plus a one-time processing fee of $6.55, Business Insider reported. A similar plan has been offered before but is not routinely offered all the time.
The company is involved in a push to reach 5 million subscribers by the end of the year. It currently has more than 2 million, BI reported.
In the same announcement, MoviePass also said its subscribers were responsible for significant portions of opening weekend numbers for some recent releases, including 17 percent of “Annihilation,” 10 percent of “Every Day,” and 9 percent of “Love, Simon,” BI reported.
MoviePass also told Business Insider it bought more than 1 million tickets for “Black Panther,” which has grossed over $1 billion worldwide; more than 750,000 tickets for “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”; and more than 500,000 tickets for “The Greatest Showman.”
MoviePass has been under fire in recent months for removing customer access to a few AMC theater locations in large cities, reportedly to put pressure on the chain to share profits with it, The Verge reported.
The company also blacked out recent Jennifer Lawrence vehicle “Red Sparrow” in certain areas so customers could not use their passes to see it, the Verge reported.
“We occasionally remove some films from our ticketing inventory in some markets for a limited time, similar to how we organically promote films in certain markets to better understand member behavior,” MoviePass said at the time, SlashFilm reported.
