Man Dreams of Motorcycle for Years, Dies 3 Miles Into First Ride

By    |   Tuesday, 16 July 2013 06:29 PM EDT

A Wyoming man who waited 44 years to buy a motorcycle because his wife thought they were dangerous died in an accident after riding the new bike just three miles.

Just before the accident, Barry Strang, of Casper, posted a picture of his new motorcycle to his Facebook page with the note: “44 years finally got one. ☺”

The Casper Star-Tribune said the recently semi-retired Strang had visited a local Harley Davidson dealership every week for the past 38 years, dreaming of buying one, although his wife, Pam Strang, always said no because of safety concerns.

Finally, at age 59, Strang went with his wife to the dealership and bought his bike. The couple split up, the Star-Tribune said, so Pam Strang could run an errand.

In a terrible turn of events, Strang was involved in an accident three miles into his trip to where the couple had planned to meet, crashing into a tractor-trailer and sliding under the truck, the paper reported.

County 10 News covered the traffic accident and said troopers were investigating whether Strang’s unfamiliarity with the motorcycle may have contributed to the accident. Strang was apparently driving beside the tractor-trailer and both were turning on a right-hand curve when Strang’s motorcycle turned into the truck and Strang was thrown underneath.

Pam Strang told the Star-Tribune that she wasn’t angry at her husband because he’d always wanted the motorcycle and said it was on his “bucket list” of things to do.

“It was something he wanted his whole life. It’s like my son said, ‘Dad went out with the biggest smile on his face,’” she said.
