Thousands of Americans suffer each year at the hands of thieves. Last year saw 748,841 vehicles stolen, according to the Insurance Information Institute, and with the average dollar loss per theft being $8,407, it is an expensive issue sweeping the nation.
Each year the National Insurance Crime Bureau issues a report of the most commonly stolen vehicles in the U.S. and the latest rankings have just been released. The top three vehicles most prone to theft are all older models. The Honda Civic, Honda Accord and Ford Pickup make up the top three most stolen vehicles.
When it comes to vehicle theft, there seems to be a notable trend that targets specific makes and models.
A previous report found that older Honda and Toyota models tend to be more prone to theft. There are various reasons for this. A report published on Rutgers University Libraries noted that a lack of electronic immobilizers in these vehicles made them prime targets for robbers. Furthermore, research shows there are many more older cars around to steal than there are newer ones.
