A Moscow collision between a passenger train and a cargo train Tuesday left at least six people dead and as many as 45 others injured.

The crash occurred when cars from a passing cargo train derailed and smashed into a passenger train that was running on a parallel track, The Associated Press reported. The crash happened near Naro-Fominsk, a town about 30 miles southwest of Moscow.

Of the approximately 45 people injured in the crash, 18 are said to be in a critical condition after suffering head trauma, according to First Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets, the Russian news site RT.com reported.

In total, 25 people were reportedly hospitalized, according to Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry.

Hundreds of rescue workers, dozens of ambulance crews, and several helicopters rushed to the site to help the victims of the train collision, the AP noted.

Nearly 400 individuals were on the 16-car passenger train that was reportedly traveling from Moscow to Chisinau, the capital of Moldova.

The exact cause of the derailment that led to the crash is being investigated by the Moscow Region Transport Department, which is said to be looking into whether a broken rail triggered the cargo cars to dislodge from the track.

According to Andrey Yuryev of the National Association of Liability Insurers, the injured passengers could potentially receive up to 2 million rubles, equivalent to $57,000, in compensation for the crash, RT News noted.

The collision reportedly stopped trains in their tracks on railways in the surrounding area for hours.
