Monty Oum, an animator known for creating the web series “RWBY” and “Red vs. Blue” and for also heading up operations at Rooster Teeth Productions, died Sunday at age 33.
Oum fell into a coma after experiencing a severe allergic reaction during a
medical procedure, according to a statement on the Rooster Teeth website, which urged fans to take a different approach to mourning Oum.
“In lieu of flowers or gifts, we ask that you simply do something creative,” the statement said. “Use your imagination to make the world a better place in any way that you can. If you know Monty like we do, then you know he would certainly be doing that if he were able to.”
Before joining Rooster Teeth in 2009, Oum worked as a game designer for
Namco Bandai, The New York Times reported.
“Red vs. Blue” features characters from the Halo video games, and episodes draw about 1 million views on YouTube, The Times said.
“RWBY,” an action series in which heroes use an element called “Dust” to fight supernatural forces, drew about 4 million YouTube
views with its first episode, Time reported.
A GoFundMe campaign established to help with medical expenses has raised more than $230,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
Twitter users remembered Oum.
