Montreal Ice Age caves formed 15,000 years ago have been discoverd by two amateur explorers sitting underneath the Canadian city.

Luc Le Blanc and Daniel Caron had been exploring caves as a hobby for years are were members of the Quebec Speleological Society, the BBC reported. The men believed there were more caves connected to Saint-Leonard Cavern in Montreal, but could not find an entrance until a few years ago.

In 2014, the men found a fissure in the ground, which they were later able to get a camera into and see there was a cave inside. After two more years, they found limestone they could break through, and in October discovered a large cave and an underground lake that were formed during the Ice Age, the Toronto Star reported

The cave contains stalactites and has 18-foot high ceilings.

The pair has explored part of the cave and plan to continue their exploration while ensuring the city above remains sound and undamaged, the BBC reported.

Caron said the cave discovery fulfilled his dream of finding a place that no one has ever been before.

“Normally you have to go to the moon to find that kind of thing,” Caron told the Star.

“Underground excavation is the only thing on the planet where there is no scientific, technical or technological means of knowing if there are caverns, and whether they are large or small,” he continued, noting that ground-penetrating radar doesn’t work.

The pair plan to continue to explore the cavern as the water levels go down for the winter, the Star reported. They may also use divers to see what is under the ground.
