A mom accompanying her son to prom is something most teens would cringe at, so Fatima Faruq was moved when her son suggested they go together.
Eighteen years ago, Faruq had given up going to her high school senior prom because she had recently given birth to Nassir Al-Faruq and was trying to cut costs wherever she could, The Washington Post noted.
Ten years later she became a single mom after splitting with Nassir Al-Faruq's father.
So, when it came time for her son to prepare for his own prom, he thought about the sacrifice she made for him and decided to return the favor.
"When I was 6 months old she didn't want to go to her prom because all the money she had she used it to buy her first apartment to take care of me," Nassir Al-Faruq said, according to Fox News.
He explained that, ever since he heard the story, he had been thinking of a way to repay his mom. Taking her to prom was the perfect way to show his appreciation. He decided that, if they were going to go together, they were not going to cut any corners.
Fatima Faruq had a complete makeover for the special occasion and a family member designed matching outfits for the mom and son duo.
"The color of the dress is my favorite color and he picked it out," Fatima Faruq said, per WTNH-TV.
When the big night arrived, a professional photographer came to their house to do a photo shoot before mother and son were whisked off to the prom at the Crystal Tea Room in downtown Philadelphia on Friday.
The hall was buzzing as the two made their dramatic entrance, stunning students and teachers from Nassir Al-Faruq's school who could not believe Fatima Faruq was his mother.
"They said, ‘Yo, you and your mom look dope. Y'all are celebrities,'" Nassir Al-Faruq said, according to The Washington Post.
Once the excitement died down, the two enjoyed themselves by dancing together and chatting to Nassir Al-Faruq's friends.
As the evening came to a close, Fatima Faruq told WTNH-TV that it felt as if she could close a chapter in her life, one which "started and ended with the same person."
