The Missouri Supreme Court has cleared the way for three proposed initiatives to be placed on the November ballot, but the petitions still must be certified by state officials.
According to the
St. Louis Post Dispatch, the measures include an increase in the tobacco tax, a boost in the state minimum wage, and a cap on payday loan interest rates.
Supporters of all three initiatives say they collected enough signatures to put their proposals to a vote in November. But a challenge from opponents to the Democratic Secretary of State Robin Carnahan’s wording of the signature petitions delayed certification of the measures.
The court found that both Carnahan’s wording and notes prepared by Republican state Auditor Tom Schweich to accompany the ballot summaries of the petitions were fair and sufficient.
Carnahan has until Aug. 7 to certify that enough signatures on each petition actually belong to registered state voters.
