Missing teenager Emily Wynell Paul appears to have sent a letter to her mother some five years after she disappeared from the family home in Southport, Florida, the Panama City News Herald reported Monday.

Pam Massimiani, the girl's mother, confirmed that she received the letter but is keeping the details of its content private for now, the newspaper stated. Paul left the home in April 2013 at 14, packing a suitcase and leaving a note saying that she was leaving, the News Herald wrote.

"I'm pretty sure it's from her," Massimiani said of the letter, according to the newspaper. "There's a lot of mixed emotions and a lot of feelings."

Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford told the News Herald while he would like more confirmation, he feels "pretty good" that Paul is the letter's author. Authorities believe that Paul, now 19, learned on the internet how to successfully run away and took items she could use for online communication.

According to a news release issued by sheriff's office in 2013, Paul had never left home before and her actions were considered "very unusual" by her family. According to HuffPost, she was last seen getting into a vehicle driven by an unidentified individual.

"She did leave a three-page note that said when she turns 18 she would return if she wanted to," Bay County Sheriff investigator Jerry Metz told WMBB-TV in 2016. "We also learned that she had taught herself on how not to be found."

Massimiani told the television station then that she feared that her daughter was being held against her will.

"I'm afraid it could have turned into something more than a runaway," Massimiani said at the time. "There is nothing that would make me not love my child or want me to be separate from her. I just want my child back."
