As the newly crowned Miss USA made the rounds on talk shows after her win Sunday, she flip-flopped on her position during the pageant that healthcare is a privilege rather than a right.
Talking to Michael Strahan on “Good Morning America,” Kara McCullough said she wasn’t surprised at the backlash her comments received, but wanted to clarify her answer and explain it more.
“I am privileged to have healthcare and I do believe that it should be a right,” the 25-year-old scientist told Strahan. “I hope and pray moving forward that healthcare is a right for all worldwide.”
McCullough received praise from conservatives but backlash from others about her original comments that healthcare is a privilege that comes from having jobs in the U.S.
McCullough also said during the pageant that she doesn't see herself as a feminist but as an "equalist" and that she believes women are equal to men in the workplace.
The beauty queen also clarified those remarks with Strahan, saying, “I don’t want anyone to look at that as if I’m not about women’s rights. Because I am. We deserve a lot when it comes to opportunity in the workplace as well as just, like, leadership positions. And I’ve seen and witnessed firsthand the impact women have.”
Twitter fans were sad to see McCullough backtrack on her remarks.
