The Miss Universe 2017 crown went to Miss France Iris Mittenaere on Sunday night as she beat out 85 other contestants from around the world in the competition held at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines.
Mittenaere, 23, a dental surgery student, edged Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier and Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar in the finals, reported E! News. The women went through three days of interviews, a swimsuit competition, and an evening gown presentation before the final live broadcast.
The televised portion included an additional swimwear and evening gown competition and final question-and-answer.
Host Steve Harvey, who made an epic misreading of the winner at last year's pageant, poked fun at himself by wearing large eyeglasses while announcing the winner. They were delivered to him on stage by last year's queen, former Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach, noted the Washington Post.
"Thank you, Pia," Harvey said, getting a healthy laugh from the audience. "A year late, but thank you."
"All right, let's get it out of the way," Harvey said. "I know what you're thinking: 'Is that the guy from last year? Did they bring back that guy from last year?' Well, they did. It's me. I'm back. Been a long year getting here too, cause boy, I paid the price for last year."
The Miss Universe website said Mittenaere was born in Lille, France and has been pursuing her degree in dental surgery for the past five years.
"Besides dental school, Mittenaere has always been fond of extreme sports, traveling the world and cooking new French dishes," said the site. "She enjoys making others happy, especially when volunteering at Bienvenue-Tongasoa and Les Bonnes Fées."
