The "Miracle on Ice" U.S. Olympic hockey team that pulled off a stunning upset victory over the USSR in 1980 will reunite Saturday to celebrate the 35th anniversary of its gold medal season.
"To be able to share our story with fans has always been a pleasure, and given the 35th Anniversary is in 2015, this seems like a great time to reach as many people as possible," said retired NHL forward and 1980 Olympian Dave Christian,
NBC Sports reported. "Honestly, sharing the stories never gets old, because it always ends with a smile on someone’s face."
The reunion will take place in Lake Placid, New York, in the same stadium where the underdog team became legends with a 4-3 victory over coach Viktor Tikhonov's 'Big Red Machine.' The stadium, once known as the Olympic Fieldhouse, was renamed Herb Brooks Arena for the legendary USA coach who died in 2003.
During the event, the surviving 19 members of the team will raise defenseman Bob Suter’s No. 20 to the rafters. Suter, who is also the father of Minnesota Wild defenseman Ryan Suter, died last September at age 57.
"The Bobby Suter situation was kind of a wakeup call that we're all getting older," Team captain Mike Eruzione, who scored the winner against the Soviets,
told The Los Angeles Times.
Eruzione, now 60 and the grandfather of two, said elsewhere in his interview "God, we’re old. What’s even funnier is the letters I get today. They almost always start out, 'Although I wasn’t born in 1980 . . .'"
The event is part of Hockey Week Across America, which seeks to promote the sport in all 50 states. T
he Associated Press reported via ESPN that some of coach Brooks' memorabilia will be available for auction during the event.
