Minnie Mouse, Hello Kitty Brawl in Times Square in Front of Tourists

By    |   Monday, 08 June 2015 10:59 AM EDT

Times Square mascots Minnie Mouse and Hello Kitty came to blows on Thursday, and police arrested both as tourists watched with mouths agape.

The New York Daily News reported that police were called to the scene to break up the cat-and-mouse melee around 3:30 p.m.

When they arrived, both costumed women had their mascot heads completely off, exposing their true identities. They turned out to be Sandra Mocha, 34, of Queens, and Giovanna Melendez, 40, of New Jersey.

Both were cuffed and hauled off.

Spider Man told the New York Post he tried to break up the fight, but couldn't stop the flurry of slaps, scratches, hair-pulling, and eye-blackening punches.

"I tried to stop them, but they were hysterical," said the man, who declined to give any identification beyond "Peter Parker."

A tourist hailing from Chicago, 23-year-old Anthony Jacobi-Dolce, said he "would definitely have tipped extra" if he were able to see more fights among the unofficial mascots. Regarding the latest matchup, he said, "I would bet on Minnie to win because I don’t even know what Hello Kitty is."

Later, in Manhattan Criminal Court, Hello Kitty was sporting a large scratch on her face.

"This is another reason why we need regulations to address the growing problems in Times Square," said Tim Tompkins, president of the Times Square Alliance.
