Mike Evans has donated $50,000 to help those whose lives have been impacted by the devastating winter storms in Texas. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver, who hails from Galveston, Texas, reached out to the United Way of Galveston on Monday with the hopes of making a difference.
"The Galveston community has been so supportive of me throughout my career," he said, according to TMZ. "After I heard about the destruction the winter storm caused, I knew I had to do something to give that same support back."
Lindsey White, executive director of United Way of Galveston, explained that $37,500 of Evans' donation will go to families in need of food and other essential items. The remainder will be given to the Johnny Mitchell Boys & Girls Club of Galveston and St. Vincent’s House, which is committed to helping disadvantaged children and families.
Other celebrities are also doing what they can to help those families affected by the storms. On Sunday Matthew McConaughey raised over $7 million through his virtual concert, "We're Texas," Entertainment Tonight reported. The event featured top performers like Kirk Franklin, Willie Nelson as well as Miranda Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, and Randy Rogers. Several Hollywood stars including Jamie Foxx and Renée Zellweger also made an appearance.
At least 57 people lost their lives in the February winter storms. The deaths occurred in at least 25 counties between Feb. 11 and March 5, The Texas Tribune reported. In Harris County alone, there were 25 lives lost, mostly due to hypothermia.
