Mika Riddick's prom dress offer to high school students who cannot afford one went viral on social media, with more than 13,000 retweets and 37,000 likes.
Riddick, 19, told WUSA-TV that she realized while shopping for her own prom in 2016 that dresses could cost hundreds of dollars and easily be out of the reach of many teenagers financially.
"That's a lot, especially for kids," Riddick told the television station. "We're going to college."
That led the Maryland teen to post on Twitter earlier this month that she would be offering her old prom dress for girls "in need" for one night at no charge.
Riddick told the television news magazine "Inside Edition" that the dress holds special meaning to her since her father, who has since died, helped her pick it out, even though it was well more than her parents' $300 budget for it.
Riddick received responses from around the country about the offer and just the kind gesture, with some offering their own dresses for proms, noted WUSA-TV.
Riddick said the response surprised her, according to WUSA-TV.
"On my thread, you just see like a bunch of girls like 'oh, I have a dress in this state. Oh, have a dress in this state,'" Riddick told WUSA-TV. "I didn't know the impact it would have on people honestly."
The teen told "Inside Edition" she has already received several requests to borrow the dress and one teen is already scheduled to wear it to her prom.
