Microsoft Office Apps on iPhone Revamped; Android Versions Coming Soon

Microsoft Office apps are now available on iPhone and are being previewed for Android devices, the company announced Thursday, expanding its "Office Everywhere, For Everyone" concept.

The company released Office apps in March for the iPad, and this was the next major step in making the apps available on all platforms, Microsoft said on its blog. Customers can now create and do basic editing tasks on their Office documents for free on their devices.

"Today we’re taking the next major step
to bring Office to everyone, on every device, and I’m excited to announce that Office apps customers love are coming to Android tablets with the start of our Office for AndroidTM tablet Preview," John Case, corporate vice president of Microsoft Office, wrote. "We're also delivering Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps for iPhone and updates for the iPad apps to ensure a consistently beautiful and productive Office experience on every device."

"Our vision of Office everywhere wouldn’t be complete without Windows, so I’m pleased to confirm that new, touch-optimized Office apps for Windows 10 are in the works and we’ll have more to share soon."

The Android apps are being previewed, with general availability expected next year, USA Today said.

"The new apps for iPhone for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint — Microsoft's iconic productivity suite — will replace the existing Office Mobile app. The apps on iPad are also getting an update," USA Today said.

Microsoft Office was available by subscription, as of last year, the newspaper said, but now smartphone and tablet users with the company’s mobile app can do much of the editing and creation for free.

Wired reported that the release for iPhone might make Microsoft "relevant" again, and gave the app's design a thumbs up.

"The most striking first impression made by Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on the iPhone is how great they look on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus," wrote Marcus Wohlsen. "On these big, crisp screens, working on documents doesn’t feel like a kludgy compromise anymore."
