The Microsoft Band got a software upgrade on Monday, enabling a range of new features for the fitness tracker and rudimentary smartwatch.
CNET.com reasoned that Microsoft "took its first bite out of the fitness market last fall with its all-in-one fitness tracker, but the Microsoft Band came with number of quirks and software that didn't quite live up to the device's potential. Today's update, the first major one since the band's launch, is the beginning."
The new operating system upgrade allows customers to use voice-activated personal assistant Cortana, type on a tiny keyboard that uses WordFlow technology to correct mistypes, and gives cyclers a dedicated hub for bicycle-related fitness tracking, among other features.
The update also improves data syncing with MapMyFitness and Microsoft HealthVault.
Perhaps most importantly, Microsoft has released tools to help third-party software developers create apps for the Band.
The company launched the Band in October, and, after this update, promises monthly tune-ups and expansions for the device's software.
