Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps is going into rehab after he was arrested last week for driving while under the influence for the second time.

Phelps was arrested Sept. 30 after police clocked him driving 84 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone in Baltimore, according to People magazine. Phelps failed a field sobriety test after he was stopped and was charged with driving under the influence, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines.

ESPN reported that Phelps registered a .14 percent on a Breathalyzer test when he was stopped, nearly twice Maryland's legal limit for intoxication. Authorities also reported he had bloodshot eyes and "his speech was mush mouth."

In a series of posts on Twitter, Phelps said he understood the seriousness of his relapse and planned on spending time away from swimming to get treatment.

Phelps is the winningest athlete in Olympic history, capturing 18 gold medals and 22 medals overall at the last three Summer Games during his career. He shattered Mark Spitz's record for a single Olympics by winning eight gold medals at Beijing in 2008.

September's arrest was Phelps' second DUI arrest. In 2004 when he was 19, the swimmer was arrested on the same charge in Maryland and later served 18 months of probation after a plea deal.
