Michael Nyqvist, the Swedish actor best known for his work in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," died on Tuesday after a battle with lung cancer.
The 56-year-old actor had reportedly suffered from the lung cancer for a year.
His death was confirmed in a statement released earlier this week by Nyqvist’s representative.
“It is with deep sadness that I can confirm that our beloved Michael, one of Sweden’s most respected and accomplished actors, has passed away quietly surrounded by family after a year-long battle with lung cancer,” the rep was quoted by The Guardian.
“Michael’s joy and passion were infectious to those who knew and loved him. His charm and charisma were undeniable, and his love for the arts was felt by all who had the pleasure of working with him.”
Since news of Nyqvist’s death broke, social media has been flooded with tributes.
Gerard Butler, who starred alongside the actor in the thriller “Hunter Killer," posted a video on Facebook, captioning it:
“Sending my condolences to Michael Nyqvist and his family. Incredibly talented and an extraordinary human being. My heart is broken.”
Meanwhile, fans also took to Twitter to express their heartache.
Nyqvist established his career in the '90s, originally landing smaller roles in local Swedish television shows, before moving on to the 2000 Swedish drama “Together,” which was said to be his breakout performance.
Four years later Nyqvist started to attract global recognition for his work, according to Hollywood.com.
In 2004 he delivered a star performance in “As it is in Heaven," which launched his international career that would span over the next several years and include performances in blockbuster hits such as "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol."
