Michael Brown Audio: Neighbor Claims to Have Captured Shooting on Tape

A possible audio recording of the Michael Brown shooting could provide new clues about what exactly happened during the deadly altercation between the unarmed black teenager and a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, earlier this month.

A Ferguson resident who claims to have picked up audio of the shooting during a private video chat call turned over his tape to CNN this week, though the recording has yet to be verified as authentic.

Gunshots ring out in the background of the clip, in which a man appears to be complimenting the person on the other end of the line. The man has not been publicly identified.

Forensic audio expert Paul Ginsberg told CNN he heard at least 10 shots, separated in a cluster of six shots followed by a brief pause and then a second round of four shots.

That pause, in particular, has stirred curiosity.

"I was very concerned about that pause . . . because it's not just the number of gunshots, it's how they're fired," Lopa Blumenthal, the attorney of the man who made the recording, told CNN. "And that has a huge relevance on how this case might finally end up."

Blumenthal told CNN that her client was speaking to his friend on a video chat service and happened to be recording the conversation when the Brown shooting took place. She said she learned of the man's recording last week from a mutual friend.

Ferguson police and witnesses have offered varying accounts of what exactly happened at the scene where officer Darren Wilson, 28, fatally shot 18-year-old Brown on August 9. Police claim that Brown lunged at Wilson and scuffled with him for his gun after the officer stopped him and a friend as they were walking down a street, according to USA Today.

Others claim they saw Brown yell, "Don't shoot!" as he raised his hands in the air. Autopsy reports show the teen was shot six times, including two fatal shots in the head.
