Miami Police Chief Miguel Esposito was suspended Tuesday morning in what could be the first step toward his firing. The move comes two days after Esposito sent City Manager Johnny Martinez a letter demanding whistle-blower protection.
Esposito learned of his suspension in a closed-door meeting with Martinez, according to
The Miami Herald.
The Miami City Commission will now review Martinez’s recommendations and could vote to give Esposito the ax. Esposito also has a week to appeal his suspension to the City Commission.
Esposito maintains he has been targeted by the mayor’s office since Dec. 29, when he wrote a letter to federal authorities accusing Mayor Tomas Regaldo of interfering with a police raid focusing on video-gaming machines.
Regaldo has denied he interfered with the raid and said that he is the one being unfairly targeted by Esposito.
Maj. Manuel Orosa, a 31-year veteran of the force, has been named acting police chief.
