Celebrities powered forward with tech-themed outfits for this year’s Met Gala on Monday in New York, paying tribute to the theme, "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology."
The event was a launch party for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's new exhibition, which honors the evolution of fashion production.
"Traditionally the handmade has been seen as being about luxury, about superiority and it's also been seen as something that's elitist," Met Museum Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton
told CNN.
"Whereas the machine has been about progress and the future. On the other side, it's been about mediocrity and dehumanization. I'm finding those values don't really hold up. Sometimes a garment that's been machine-made actually has more hours spent on it, is more luxurious than doing it by hand."
Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and Apple's chief design officer Jonathan Ive co-chaired the event.
Among the futuristic ensembles at the Costume Institute event was a Zac Posen gown — illuminated from underneath — worn by Claire Danes,
Reuters noted.
The dress won rave reviews on Twitter.
Taylor Swift wore a silver Louis Vuitton gown and black lace-up heels. She was accompanied by Selena Gomez, also wearing Vuitton.
Swift was among many attendees to don metallic colors, with Alessandra Ambrosio, Cindy Crawford, Kylie Jenner, and Rita Ora also choosing silver and gray hues.
The museum's "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" exhibit features more than 170 designs from the early 1900s to today,
CBS News reported.
The gala drew a flurry of attention on Twitter.
