Melissa Rivers spoke out publicly for the first time this week about her mother, Joan Rivers, sharing stories about the legendary comic and how "grateful and proud" she would have been for the tributes that followed her sudden September death.

Rivers, who partnered with her mother on several projects including the E! Network show "Fashion Police," admitted Wednesday at The Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment Breakfast that she was initially "overwhelmed" when asked to appear in front of the A-list crowd.

"Not just because it is the first time I'm speaking in tribute to my mother, but because every single person in this room could hire me and a few have actually fired me," Rivers said. "You know who you are but I don't want you to feel bad . . . but technically I am now an orphan."

Joan Rivers, 81, died Sept. 4 at a New York City hospital after complications occurred during an earlier medical procedure at Yorkville Endoscopy clinic, according to ABC News. The New York City medical examiner ruled that Rivers lacked sufficient oxygen to her brain for a prolonged period of time, and also stated that her heart had stopped after she was sedated with propofol.

Melissa Rivers applauded as "fearless" and "brave" for being able to entertain people despite her own fears.

"She was willing to say what others were thinking and too frightened to admit," Rivers told the audience Wednesday. "She never apologized for a joke and no topic was taboo and she was fine with that."

"Truth be told, my mother never thought of herself as a woman in a man's world. She thought herself as a comic who had to be funnier than anyone else," she continued. "She just wanted to do her job and that was to make people laugh."

Rivers ended by telling the audience, with her mother's comic flair, about the event: "She would be grateful and proud, while discretely sneaking croissants and silverware into her purse."
