Melissa Etheridge's son has died at age 21 from a drug overdose. The singer's team confirmed the passing of Beckett Cypher on Wednesday, and Etheridge later revealed the reason for her son's tragic death.
Etheridge shared Beckett with her ex, Julie Cypher. Singer David Crosby was Beckett’s biological father and a sperm donor to the couple.
"Today I joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction," Etheridge wrote in a Facebook post. "My son Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to it today."
Etheridge continued: "He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and friends. My heart is broken. I am grateful for those who have reached out with condolences and I feel their love and sincere grief. We struggle with what else we could have done to save him, and in the end we know he is out of the pain now."
Etheridge, who has been hosting virtual gatherings, added that she will sing again soon.
"It has always healed me," she said.
Etheridge and Julie share two children together: Beckett and his 23-year-old sister Bailey. Both were conceived through sperm donation from Crosby, according to Yahoo. The couple split in 2000 and Etheridge later fell into a relationship with Tammy Lynn Michaels, with whom she shares 13-year-old twins Johnnie Rose and Miller Steven.
